Those in the recycling business have stringent state laws to follow, such as requiring valid photo identification, which is then photocopied, said Rick Golsen, president of Atlanta Metal.
"Everybody that we purchase from signs an affidavit," said Golsen, who said recyclers must pay close attention to what is being brought in. "If it doesn’t look like scrap, it’s not scrap."

A/C copper thefts a hot crime

As if Georgia summer days weren’t already hot enough, some criminals are doing their part to make things even steamier. They’re breaking into air conditioning units with one goal: stealing the copper inside.

Atlanta police investigated a truck full of air conditioning units last October believed to be taken from houses in the city’s West End.

It’s not a new crime. But it’s one that doesn’t show signs of stopping anytime soon. Vacant houses, churches, schools, businesses and apartment complexes have been recent targets in metro Atlanta. And only a handful of those responsible have gotten caught.

Thieves are increasingly targeting the copper inside air conditioning units.

.
For about 30 minutes of work, often at night, criminals can pocket about 0 by selling the metal to recyclers, if they get a large enough unit. But once destroyed, that same unit could cost ,000 to replace.
"The money item is the copper," Tom Mutz, service manager for Moncrief Heating and Air conditioning, told the AJC. "They strip it down and take off the outer metal casing and take out the metal coils and any line set they can get."
Replacing the units can require extensive work inside a home, too, depending on the age of the home and the amount of damage done during the theft, Mutz said. The bigger the air conditioning unit, the more copper inside for thieves, making commercial units popular targets, Mutz said. Vacant properties or foreclosed homes are also popular targets, as well as churches, according to metro Atlanta police.
City of Atlanta police officers have responded to 150 incidents involving copper thefts just in the month of June, according to crime statistics obtained by the AJC. The crimes have prompted the police department to reach out to church leaders to discuss ways of preventing further thefts, Carlos Campos, spokesman for Atlanta police, said.
"Churches, particularly the smaller ones, make for opportunistic targets because they are generally occupied only on Sundays and Wednesday evenings," Campos said.
The crimes have extended to the suburbs, too. Since May 1, Paulding County deputies have responded to 24 cases of air conditioning units being damaged or having parts stolen, Sgt. Brandon Gurley told the AJC.
Some police agencies have been able to catch the suspected criminals in the act.
Last week, Cobb County police arrested a 26-year-old man accused of stealing the air conditioning unit from a vacant house on his own street, according to the arrest warrant. Bradley Andrew Pearson, of Kennesaw, was charged with theft by taking and criminal damage after he was captured on video surveillance and by a witness pushing the unit to the front of a house with a set of hand trucks, police said.
This week, three people involved with a ring suspected in at least 30 copper crimes were arrested by DeKalb County police, and additional arrests are expected. Dozens of air conditioning units worth 0,000 were stolen in the North Indian Creek Drive area alone, Mekka Parish with DeKalb police said.
And earlier this month, Hall County deputies arrested two people suspected of stealing copper from air conditioning units on top of an elementary school, resulting in ,000 to 0,000 worth of damage.
But the problem may be too big for law enforcement to handle alone, some recyclers say.
"It takes an effort between the victims, the police, the recyclers and the DA’s office," said Joe Bulat with Schnitzer Southeast, an Atlanta-based recycling company. "Without one of those four entities, you can’t do anything with this crime.”
Bulat helped create a group several years ago that has grown into the Southeast Metal Task Force. Based in Atlanta, the group’s 1,000 members include police departments and metal companies from around the metro area. The group’s website lists alerts for metal thefts to keep police officers and recyclers on the lookout for criminals.
"I can’t stand these criminals," Bulat said. "They give us all a bad name."
But copper tubing rarely has any type of marking on it, making it nearly impossible to know where it came from, Bulat said. A can of spray paint is a cheap way to scare would-be copper thieves by simply painting a section of the metal with a bright color, he said.
"They won’t take those. In their minds, it’s marked," Bulat said. "If we did receive any coils with spray paint, we’re gonna call police.”
Other solutions include adding motion lights around an air conditioning unit or a pressure switch, which can alert a home alarm system when a line is cut. Being aware of vacant homes in your neighborhood is also a good idea, experts said.
While copper theft crimes don’t show any signs of slowing down, many are hopeful that spreading the word will help fight the expensive — and hot — problem.
"If you want to go pick up cans, pick up cans," Golsen said. "But don’t pick up someone else’s cans.”

MERRITT ISLAND — Florida’s tougher scrap-metal resale regulations seem to be cracking down on thefts of air-conditioning units, Brevard County Sheriff’s Agent Lee Wenner said.
And a Suntree company plans to discreetly mark 20,000 A/C units — 15,000 in Palm Bay, 5,000 in Cocoa — with numbered “microdots” to try to track scrapyard thefts.
As of July 1, secondhand metal dealers must get signed statements, thumbprints and photographs from sellers; purchase metal using check or bank transfer rather than cash; and transmit transaction records to law enforcement officials.
They must also verify ownership before buying A/C coils. Earlier this month, Cocoa Police Detective Doug Levine said thieves broke into his city’s public works compound, where two large A/C units were stored.
“They didn’t even touch them. They walked right by them like they were just a bucket of paint,” Levine said.
“They were sitting there ripe for the picking. A year ago, they would have been shredded,” he said.
Central Brevard law enforcement officials have formed a scrap-metal task force to combat these thefts, which were formerly a quick source of over-the-counter cash for criminals.
Merritt Island landlord Ralph Perrone founded the task force after three A/C units were swiped during Memorial Day weekend from one of his Cocoa buildings, racking up ,500 in damages.
This spring, Perrone and a co-investor bought the former Circuit City property on Merritt Island. He recently discovered that thieves had stolen three Florida Power & Light transformers behind the building, along with ,000 worth of copper wiring.
“Who did it absolutely had to know what they were doing — or they would have been fried. They knew exactly what to steal, exactly what to disconnect,” Perrone said.
Rob Webber, who owns Garden Street Iron & Metal in Fort Myers, is vice president of the Florida Recyclers Association. The group helped craft the tougher state regulations, which he praised.
“Scrap metal theft no longer exists in Lee and Collier counties,” Webber said. “The biggest thing was getting all the dealers on board and getting law enforcement to participate. It’s worked out phenomenal.”
Shawn Andreas is the co-founder of Uneighbors, an online neighborhood-watch network. During a task force meeting earlier this month, he announced plans to label 20,000 A/C units using numbered microdots, which measure about 1 millimeter across.
Microdots are visible with ultraviolet light, and their ID numbers can be read using a magnifier. They can be applied using clear adhesive pens or aerosol spray cans.
Levine and Wenner said the technology could also be used to identify stolen pawn-shop items like Xboxes, laptop computers, weed eaters, golf clubs, boat engines, artwork and bicycles.
Andreas said the A/C labeling campaign should kick off in mid-November.

Yes, physical charms are false and beauty may be vain, but it’s still a powerful asset and undeniably difficult when a woman endures the loss of it.
Oh Solomon, Solomon, what a tug of war you played at! You may have been a wise ruler, but you were still such an earthly man. Weren’t you allied to the beauties of foreign nations? And weren’t you surrounded by the loveliest daughters of Zion?
The splendor of Sheba was your companion! I can’t believe that your Song of Songs was merely an allegory without a physical reference. So just who were you writing those proverbs for?
It couldn’t possibly have been meant for me.

Beauty is False
By Joyce Schur

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month . On Sunday, October 2, 2011, the Orthodox Union’s Department of Community Services is co-presenting an important seminar on this subject at Congregation Ahawas Achim B’nai Jacob & David in West Orange, NJ. For details, please download:
Prevention_Detection_Treatment_Genetics_of_Breast_Cancer_in-Jewish_Women.pdf
She is a beautiful, intelligent, professional yet compassionate middle-aged woman. She sits down across from me, opens up a medical file, and then proceeds to pull out all kinds of paperwork, lab reports and statistical charts. She asks a lot of questions, a lot of extremely personal questions, but for me this is really just déjà vu. I’ve done this so many times in the past twenty years with other family members, so of course it feels familiar.
Only this time, it’s for my sake alone that we are having this conversation. Dr. B. is an oncologist, and she wants to discuss the various courses of chemotherapy and radiation treatments I’ll have to consider, along with their relative values, long-term consequences and inherently unpleasant side effects.
"The hardest thing to deal with, psychologically, is hair-loss," she says, and then she hands me a whole stack of promotional brochures for head-wraps and wigs. I hand them all back and I can instantly tell by her expression that she thinks I’m in denial, but she continues to chatter away about the importance of setting personal goals for the future.
"Listen," I tell her, "the hardest thing for me to deal with psychologically is the fact that I won’t be visiting Israel for the next 6 months. I know a number of people over there and they all shave their heads. It’s in style and considered extremely chic. If I pierce a few holes in my ears or scribble a henna tattoo on my arm, I’m going to fit right in. But as far as future personal goals are concerned, I’ve got two really big ones for now: be the most fashionable chemo patient you’ve ever seen, and then be as un-seen by you as possible once these treatments are over with."
Dr. B. laughs, puts the stack of promotional brochures back into my hands, and once again I return them to her like we’re playing a game of hot potato.
"These brochures are pretty fashionable," she says, "don’t you even want to take a look?"
"Here," I tell her, as I point to my own shoulder length tresses, "don’t you even want to take a look?" And as she leans in a bit closer I give a small tug which makes her gasp.
"Wow, that’s amazing, I would never have guessed. It’s so natural looking. I think it’s great that you’re getting yourself used to the idea of wearing a wig."
"Well," I answer, "I’ve been trying to get myself used to that idea for years now. I’ve got a whole closet full of hats, scarves, berets and hair. It’s part of the observant Jewish tradition."
"Ah, I see," she replies, "I’ve had a few orthodox Jewish women as patients and they really do seem to handle things much better, overall. Why do you suppose that is?"
"Faith probably has a lot to do with it," I respond, "but there’s also this little Friday night ritual we have, and every week we make sure to imprint ourselves with a “sheker ha-chain” philosophy of living."
She tries to repeat the phrase, mangles it badly, then asks me to explain…so I do:
"On Friday nights, there is a custom. We gather around the table before dinner and sing traditional songs. One is to welcome the angels of sabbath peace and one is to honor the women of the household. This second song is called “Aishet Chayil, A Woman of Valor”. The words were composed by King Solomon and you can find them in the Book of Proverbs. It’s a very moving and powerful description of a thoroughly modern woman who’s actively and forcefully involved in all aspects of living; within the home, within the community, and even within the world at large. But Solomon concludes that the physical virtues of charm and beauty are false and vain, a superficiality. It’s the Jewish perspective that only the sincere, innermost attributes of a woman’s faith and spiritual awe are worth praising."
Dr. B. listens politely, she smiles, she is indulgent. Then she tells me that hair loss occurs about 10 days after the first treatment. She wants me to know that many women decide to cut off their hair beforehand to lessen the trauma. I leave her office with a treatment plan and a certain amount of confidence that I’m going to make it through this ordeal. I don’t book any appointments at the salon, and there’s not a thought in my mind about hair loss.
So I skip the haircut and let things take their own course. Ten days after my first treatment, I’m a complete stranger to myself. I can’t even look in a mirror. When I inadvertently catch a glimpse of the reflected alien, all I do is cry and think of those other words of Solomon:
"Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thine eyes are as doves behind thy veil; thy hair is as a flock of goats, that trail down from mount Gilead."
But I am only at tug of war with myself. I do the oddest thing. I save the dead hair and wrap it up in tissue paper. I want to remind myself for awhile, just what it is that I have lost. I think of King Solomon and I am bitter. On Friday afternoons, I take out the tissue package…and mourn.
Then I reluctantly come down to the dinner table on Friday nights. But when I look around the Sabbath table, I begin to see an amazing thing. It is all right there in the eyes of my family and my friends. They have not just been mouthing the words of Solomon for all these years; they have taken it into their hearts. To them, my hair is what it always was, a small fashion accessory and a complete invisibility. I stare back into the mirror of my own soul and take a better look. It’s a mystifying thing about valor, and it turns out that mine has been chemo-resistant all along. It’s still right there in the reflection.
And it has been entirely left…unscathed.

"Not With Haste"
Your eyes they tie me down so hard
I’ll never learn to put up a guard
So keep my love, my candle bright
Learn me hard, oh learn me right
This ain’t no sham
I am what I am
Though I may speak some tongue of old
Or even spit out some holy word
I have no strength from which to speak
When you sit me down, and see I’m weak
We will run and scream
You will dance with me
They’ll fulfill our dreams and we’ll be free
And we will be who we are
And they’ll heal our scars
Sadness will be far away
So as we walked through fields of green
Was the fairest sun I’d ever seen
And I was broke, I was on my knees
And you said yes as I said please
This ain’t no sham
I am what I am
I leave no time
For a cynic’s mind
We will run and scream
You will dance with me
Fulfill our dreams and we’ll be free
We will be who we are
And they’ll heal our scars
Sadness will be far away
Do not let my fickle flesh go to waste
As it keeps my heart and soul in its place
And I will love with urgency but not with haste

4.5/5 stars.
Dave Matthews Band’s Away From The World and The Avett Brothers’ The Carpenter sit atop a jaw-dropping collection of Sept. 2012 records. Mumford & Sons’ Babel, the follow-up to their explosive debut Sigh No More, is among the heavy-hitters, released on Sept. 25.
The title track “Babel” begins Mumford’s second LP with a high-octane, violently charming jam that will surely be a single.
Marcus Mumford’s passionate voice evokes a different emotion with each note and word, an aspect that never falters throughout every tune on the record.
Winston Marshall’s banjo chops shine on the release, though they work best on “Whispers In The Dark,” a pleading love song that builds into an intoxicating, kick-drum filled ending.
The first single off Babel, “I Will Wait,” retains a similar sound to Sign No More the previous two tracks lack. “I Will Wait” suffers a bit because of its placement after “Whispers In The Dark,” as the transition between the songs makes the two tracks hard to distinguish.
“Holland Road” not only incorporates lyrics and music that hold true to Mumford’s debut, but also ends in the classic “har har” chant made popular in the songs “White Blank Page” and “Little Lion Man.”
The first calming song on Babel, “Ghosts That We Knew,” is a much-needed track at this point on the record, cooling the lively mood that appeared to have no end.
Finally, Mumford boasts their fan favorite, “Lover of the Light,” another endearing jam with lyrics regarding darkness. Building up into a brass-infused finish, “Lover of the Light” certainly ends the first half of Babel superbly.
“Lover’s Eyes” completes an entrancing one-two punch (shared with “Lover of the Light”) with a heartbroken track about a man trying to get over his lost love.
Being, by far, the shortest number on Babel, “Reminder” appears to be merely a transition song, until the lyrics are heard. This acoustic track exhibits Marcus’ unwavering love, likely telling his wife, actress Carey Mulligan (Drive), all of his gloomy love songs are not about their relationship.
On “Hopeless Wanderer,” Marcus shows how astonishing his guitar skills are. Though he typically sticks with chords, his strumming patterns continue to evolve, growing more complex. “Hopeless Wanderer” features his most aggressive strumming yet, alongside an excellent piano performance from Ben Lovett.
“Broken Crown” shows Mumford & Sons’ growth since entering the music scene just a few years ago. This deceptively new track once was “To Darkness,” one of Mumford’s more mediocre demos, that has matured into “Broken Crown,” the most passionate, temperamental song on Babel.
The British foursome shines on their latest creation, as the record ends with “Below My Feet” and “Not With Haste,” both accompanied by electric culminations of sound that promise to be enthralling in-concert tunes.
While most Mumford songs are top-notch and present a struggle to choose a favorite, “Not With Haste” should rank among the top with “Awake My Soul.”
