At this point, I feel like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Stoppard’s famous play about the pair: There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where I could have avoided all of this. But somehow I missed it.

Freshman Patrick Sharp says he started the club so that students of European and Euro-American descent can celebrate their shared history and culture. He said members can also discuss issues that affect white people, such as immigration and affirmative action.

Sharp, who is from Birmingham, Ala. and enrolled at the Atlanta school this summer, said any student can join and that he would work with other clubs, such as the Black Student Alliance, on common issues.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (bit.ly/19xKRfU) reports that whites comprise 38 percent of Georgia State’s student body, followed by blacks at 35 percent, Asians at 12 percent and Latinos at 7 percent.

…..item 2)…. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead …

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia …

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosencrantz_and_Guildenstern_Are_Dead

Synopsis

The play concerns the misadventures and musings of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet who are childhood friends of the prince, focusing on their actions with the events of Hamlet as background. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is structured as the inverse of Hamlet; the title characters are the leads, not supporting players, and Hamlet himself has only a small part. The duo appears on stage here when they are off-stage in Shakespeare’s play, with the exception of a few short scenes in which the dramatic events of both plays coincide. In Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are used by the King in an attempt to discover Hamlet’s motives and to plot against him. Hamlet, however, mocks them derisively and outwits them, so that they, rather than he, are executed in the end. Thus, from Rosencrantz’s and Guildenstern’s perspective, the action in Hamlet is largely nonsensically comical.

The two characters, brought into being within the puzzling universe of Stoppard’s play by an act of the playwright’s creation, have generally interchangeable, yet periodically unique, identities. Thus, the two often confuse their own names, as do the other characters when referring to them. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are portrayed as two clowns or fools in a world that is beyond their understanding; they cannot identify any reliable feature or the significance in words or events. Their own memories are not reliable or complete and they misunderstand each other as they stumble through philosophical arguments while not realising the implications to themselves. They often state deep philosophical truths during their nonsensical ramblings, yet they depart from these ideas as quickly as they come to them. At times Guildenstern appears to be more enlightened than Rosencrantz; at times both of them appear to be equally confounded by the events occurring around them.

After the two characters witness a performance of The Murder of Gonzago—the story within a story in the play Hamlet—they find themselves on a boat taking prince Hamlet to England with the troupe that staged the performance. They are intended to give the English king a message telling him to kill Hamlet. Instead, Hamlet discovers this and switches the letter for another, telling the king to kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. During the voyage, the two are ambushed by pirates and lose their prisoner, Hamlet, before resigning themselves to their fate and presumably dying thereafter.

Major themes of the play include existentialism, free will vs. determinism, the search for value, and the impossibility of certainty. As with many of Tom Stoppard’s works, the play has a love for cleverness and language. It treats language as a confounding system fraught with ambiguity.

From the album Canned Wheat in 1969, this version of No Time has an extended intro and ending. With some great added riffs and a very psychedelic sound, this version came out a few months before the better-known version of No Time from the American Woman album.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, out

Everyone is waiting for the light
be afraid, don’t be afraid
the sun is shining out of my eyes
it will not set tonight
and the world counts loudly to ten

One
Here comes the sun
Two
Here comes the sun
Three
It is the Brightest star of all
Four
Here comes the sun

The sun is shining out of my hands
it can burn, it can blind you all
when it breaks out of the fists
it lays down hotly on the face
it will not set tonight
and the world counts loudly to ten

One
Here comes the sun
Two
Here comes the sun
Three
It is the Brightest star of all
Four
Here comes the sun
Five
Here comes the sun
Six
Here comes the sun
Seven
It is the Brightest star of all
Eight, nine
Here comes the sun

The sun is shining out of my hands
it can burn, it can blind you
when it breaks out of the fists
it lays down hotly on your face
it lays down painfully on your chest
balance is lost
it lets you go hard to the floor
and the world counts loudly to ten

One
Here comes the sun
Two
Here comes the sun
Three
It is the Brightest star of all
Four
And it will never fall from the sky
Five
Here comes the sun
Six
Here comes the sun
Seven
It is the Brightest star of all
Eight, nine
Here comes the sun

How I won the entirely self-generated war with FSU Transportation

A small, white envelope tucked in between my windshield wiper and my windshield had become an all too common sight for me. It was a parking citation; to be more specific, it was my fourth parking citation in what may have been a month.

But as much as I hated the idea of having to pay another for doing something that had absolutely no impact on the university, I wasn’t mad. In fact, all I could do was laugh, because I knew well enough that it was completely my fault.

In hindsight it would have been easier to just pay to get the replacement parking permit that I’ve so desperately needed since May. But, for me, this became a matter of principle, and in my mind I was locked in a full-blown war with Florida State University Transportation Services.

For a good portion of the summer, I subsisted off of temporary daily permits that I could print before class. Then, with no warning whatsoever, the temporary permits stopped. I had apparently reached a limit, and the university was telling me so.

It wasn’t original intention to keep downloading temporary permits. I had ordered a new student parking permit online in May, but I never received it. I called FSU Transportation, only to be told that I would have to pay for a new pass. Yes, this seems small, and for anything else, I’m usually willing to shell out that kind of money.

But, like I said earlier, this was a matter of principle. In addition to the tuition paid to actually attend classes at the university, students are required to pay a transportation access fee that currently runs .90 per credit hour per semester. This means that, if you take the university’s recommended 15 credit hours per semester, you’re paying 3.50 each semester for parking, bus rides, sidewalk maintenance and the like.

I understand the need for these kinds of things, and in no way am I arguing that students shouldn’t have to pay these fees. Still, in spite of the fact that students pay this money each semester, FSU is simply too cheap to let students have a replacement parking pass for free.

So every time I walk to my car to see that little slip of paper nestled on my windshield, I’m reminded that this isn’t just a university where people come to learn and to discover who they are and what they want to do with their lives – this is also a business that will take any opportunity it can to collect some extra money, even if that means charging a student for desperately needing to get to class.

The thing is that this simply shouldn’t be an issue. If I were a practical or economical man I would have paid the fee for a replacement parking permit long ago. Maybe I’m just too focused on principle or ideals; maybe I’m just too stubborn to admit when I’m wrong; maybe I just like conflict.

At this point, I feel like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Stoppard’s famous play about the pair: There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where I could have avoided all of this. But somehow I missed it.
