As someone who followed the Steubenville rape case, I am disgusted with the way it was covered in the news. I hope any reader who followed the case is also disgusted, because it featured a sickening manipulation of the public’s perception of the two teens who were ultimately convicted of raping an underage girl.

Some background information is necessary here. The case itself deals with a 16-year-old girl who was violated by two other teens while unconscious. Trent Mays, 17, and Ma’lik Richmond, 16, were ultimately found guilty of attacking and violating the girl. Mays was also found guilty of distributing pictures and videos of the assault that took place that night in August 2012. Additionally, the two teens allowed friends like Michael Nodianos to take their own photos and videos of the vulnerable girl after they had raped her using their fingers.

The teens were tried as juveniles and ultimately convicted, with Richmond sentenced to serve at least one year, while Mays, the primary distributor of the photographs and video, was sentenced to serve at least two years in the state juvenile system. Both could remain incarcerated until they are 21.

In spite of all the information provided, there are key elements missing from much of the reporting. For example, when pronouncing the sentence of the two teens, the judge pointed out they could have been tried as adults, a decision that would likely have yielded more severe punishments. Furthermore, the trial itself did not deal with the looming task of convening a grand jury to determine if others involved in the cover-up and image distribution, like Nodianos, should face criminal charges themselves.

Adding insult to injury is the fact that the victim faced intense public scorn from other Steubenville citizens in the time leading up to the trial. Nate Hubbard, a volunteer coach for the football team at the high school, is one of those skeptics.

“The rape was just an excuse, I think,” Hubbard said to The New York Times.

Hubbard neatly sums up the opinions of many in Steubenville and other cities in the United States who make victims of rape feel like the criminals for finding the courage to speak out against those who violated them.

Unfortunately, the media coverage of Steubenville did little to counter those who further shamed an already embarrassed girl. Candy Crowley, when reporting the two teens had officially been convicted, referred to the accused as star football players.

Crowley later stressed the youth and emotional vulnerability of Mays and Richmond when she asked a legal expert to elaborate on their future now that they had been convicted. As a network, CNN also played footage of the tearful apologies both boys offered in court, and general correspondent Poppy Harlow waxed on about how difficult it was for her “[…] to watch what happened as these two young men that had such promising futures […] literally watched as they believed their lives fell apart.”

I acknowledge the emotional nature of the trial and the testimony, but for CNN and other networks to manipulate the coverage so and to be so blatantly in the corner of the rapists is stunning. After all, these are two boys who unabashedly took advantage of a helpless girl and followed that atrocious act up by letting their friends get in on the action of distributing video and pictures of the crime. Richmond and Mays knew exactly what they were doing and expressed no remorse until it was too late to do more than generate public sympathy for them.

The events in Steubenville are not about two star football players whose bright futures were tragically cut short by some mistake; they are about a girl who made a mistake in partying too hard and who was then exploited, raped and publicly humiliated, all before she knew it had even happened. My sympathies go out to the victim, and my thanks go to the judge who correctly explained the truth of the matter to the two criminals.

Citizens of the world,
We are anonymous.

Recently some of you may of heard about a cover up, involving rape.

In Steubenville, Ohio, the 16-year old girl was at her girlfriend’s house. Where these two animals drugged her, kidnapped her, and proceeded to transport her comatose body to party after party, raping her both vaginally, and anally as entertainment for the other party goers. They are just two members of the infamous "Rape Crew", as they call themselves. A bunch of spoiled football players who drug and rape girls in the community. All the while this girl was being victimized, other guys were filming and tweeting pics to their friends. When the coach found out about the incident, he told his players to immediately destroy any documentation of their phones. He is best friends with the Sheriff who opted not to investigate, even though he has jurisdiction. When the girl’s parents went to the Prosecuting Attorney, she told them they didn’t really have a case, and it was just going to be too painful for their daughter to take it to trial. The Prosecuting Attorney’s son is one of the football players in the "Rape Crew". It goes on and on and on.

The 2 guys are being charged as minors. Rape is an adult crime.
Therefore, they should be charged as adults.

Cody Saltsman was originally charged in the gang rape. After a private back-room meeting at Naples Pasta House restaurant in Steubenville, between Saltsman’s father, the Sheriff, and a certain Mr. Teramana (a wealthy Steubenville resident) — Cody Saltsman’s charges were mysteriously dismissed. Saltsman is a former boyfriend of the victim of this attack, and it appears there is quite a bit of bad blood between them, adding a layer of vengeance, and viciousness that may explain the raw brutality of the attack upon this girl.

Any schools that are scheduled to play them next season should refuse to take the field, even if it means they have to forfeit the games. Send them a message.

Everyone in that community should boycott their games. If you’re going to go, at least protest.

AS many of you already know, anonymous, leaked a video of Michael Nodianos.
Him and his sick friends we’re joking about the rape.
The sheriff said "It’s a disgusting video," he said. "It’s stupidity. But you can’t arrest somebody for being stupid." Well, Sheriff, they weren’t laughing about just anything. It was obvious they witnessed something. Once again, he’s protecting these animals.

Michael Nodiano, is 18 years old, and is currently a student at Ohio State University. As the video shows all too graphically, this young man is a sociopath. And needs to be in prison not living it up on a scholarship at college.

So citizens of the world, I ask you, to share this video, and story with everyone you know. Get as much people as you can involved. Eventually, the F.B.I will get involved, if we try hard enough.

What if this was your daughter? Would you just sit here and do nothing? No you wouldn’t. So go out there, and act like it’s your daughter.

Let’s fight for what’s right.

We are anonymous.
We are legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us!

I’m glad someone has the balls to say something. Sadly, stuff like this happens all over our country, but in this case, people were stupid enough to share it. In my school, they do everything to protect the student athletes. The town needs to fire everyone who tried to cover it up including the coach. Just like Penn State, they were more concerned about winning than actually protecting people

Part 2:

CODY SALTSMAN- known as ‘the ex-boyfriend who stood by”. He was the one who uploaded the pictures on instagram and was the one who planned everything. He asked this nigga Malik Richmond to give him a favor by raping his ex-girlfriend, while he videotaped them.

MICHAEL NODIANOS- the kid on the video who’s laughing and making fun about the rape.
The 16 year-old victim is a white Latina. Just so you all know, they had also raped a 14 year-old girl in April and no one has been charged.

ENOUGH OF THIS CASE!!! People, if you are as outraged as we are, by all means share this story any way you can. Facebook this. Email the case around. You can not be silent about this corruption. An entire town government has allowed a girl to be drugged, gangraped, and dumped like a piece of trash and they want it to be kept quiet to protect the attackers!!! People if this fills you with rage as it does we, if it fills you with anger as it should… spread the word. This corruption must end!

I live about 30 minutes away from Steubenville, OH in a small town called New Cumberland, WV and I am sadly admitting that if it wouldn’t have been for Anonymous taking on this case and demanding these sick, twisted animals be brought to justice…well, I probably would have never known about this case. I feel for that girl. Those monsters and all of their friends destroyed her life…I believe that their lives should be destroyed as well.

DemocracyNow.org – We turn to Steubenville, Ohio, where members of a high school football team allegedly raped an underage girl and possibly urinated on her unconscious body over the course of an evening of partying in late August. The young men chronicled their actions on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. But after many in the town of Steubenville, including the high school football coach, rallied to the players’ defense, the hacker group "Anonymous" vowed to release the accused players’ personal information unless an apology was made. Anonymous has since released a video showing a male Steubenville high schooler joking about the alleged victim. We’re joined by three guests: Monika Johnson Hostler, president of the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence; Kristen Gwynne, an associate editor at Alternet; and "X", a member of the hacktivist group Anonymous using a pseudonym.

52.24 – Look pretty!

Hummm. Funny week. I’ve been working and alone and cold and tired. I’ve broken out of a car park, had a sober but fun New Year’s Eve, and a very cold lunch today. And Scrabulous has returned to Facebook. Except that it’s called Lexulous now. But it’s still got all my old games on it :)

Last Mondayyyy. I… went to work. And I can’t remember what happened really… Oh! I had coffee and chats with Caroline before work 😀
Same for Tuesday. Except that when I came home all my family had gone. Oh and I stalled at a junction on the way home, couldn’t re-start the engine for a few minutes and had to get pushed to the side of the road by the nice bus driver who was behind me at the lights. Oh and the headlights are screwed. They’ve been funny for a while, you try to dip them and they go off, but now there’s the added twist that they won’t come back on. You have to fiddle around a lot to get anything other than sidelights or full beam. You can choose between being invisible or dazzling other drivers, not the best thing to happen when you meet another car on a narrow twisty country lane… So I’ve been keeping them dipped and driving slower for safety’s sake.
Dad took Grandma home and the others followed on and they all went to Granny’s, I couldn’t go because I had to work. They’ve just come back this evening so I’ve been allll allloooonnnee for the rest of the week. It’s been ok, I’ve managed to fend for myself. Being able to drive helps somewhat.
I find that being on my own at home is fun a) when you’re in the mood for it and b) to start with. When it’s the wrong time of the month, the weather’s very cold, you work a lot and you’ve been alone a few days it tends to make you feel a bit miserable. Boo. The internet is fairly comforting, but there’s a limit. I found that the biting cold (inside the house too, even when the heating’s on) made me want to hole up in one room with my laptop and big fluffy dressing gown. So not much washing up or tidying got done for the first few days.
On Wednesday (New Year’s Eve) I worked from 9.35 until 6.05, and covered jewellery and watches for the last hour. I was pretty rubbish at that as I didn’t know about any of it, didn’t know which of the dozens of keys opened which cabinet, and had no idea where gift boxes or reservations would be!
At 6pm the store closed and I had to cash-up. I managed to drop some of the receipts (signing for Debenhams cards etc) down between the glass jewellery cases which was annoying and made me even slower at cashing up. I dashed upstairs with the cash bags and on the way gave Jenny from Lingerie a fright & explained that I might miss my park & ride bus. (the did a "Saturday Service" on NYE, which means the last bus leaves town at 6.15).
I handed the till bags over, grabbed my stuff and started running up the street. But just as I got halfway I saw the bus going round the roundabout at the top of the street, heading out of town. Uh oh.
I checked the bus stop in case there happened to be another bus, there wasn’t of course. Then I asked a taxi driver how much to the Park & Ride car park, £6 he said. It’s a 5 minute journey. So I sat in the bus stop & considered my options, and texted Amy to tell her what was going on (I was planning to go to her house & then out). I was getting pretty worried and miserable by this time, what with coldness and hopelessness and feeling silly. But then Jenny & her husband(partner?) drew up in the bus stop and gave me a lift out. Phew. I was very very very grateful for that.
When we got to the car park the barriers were down and there was no-one there to let me out (even though you’re not meant to park there over night). So, after scraping the ice off the car with the scraper they kindly gave me, I went up over the kerb and the grass and broke out. I had to go through a red light too as they turn off the filter for the Park & Ride at night :s
Anyway. I eventually got to Amy’s and changed there, then gave her and Kat (who was there already) a lift into Taunton. We met Cat and Sarah H and a few other people in Perkin before heading over to Shout (ohyes!). We stayed there for the rest of the night and saw plenty of people we knew from school or college as well as what seemed to be half the staff of Debenhams.
Cat is a well-known crazy dancer (she once had a dance off with someone in Shout… she won) and was, of course, doing her best. Unfortunately this led to a rather strange group of men gathering around her (and dancing too). They were all quite short, possibly of Indian extraction and wearing polo shirts or parkas. Very odd.
After the less than thrilling countdown to midnight, and a proposal over the PA from some bloke (she said yes), I gave Amy a lift home and Sarah came and stayed over at my house. It was nice to have some company! And to not drive home on my own!
After Sarah went home on Thursday (we got up at about 11.30) I had lunch and spent most of the afternoon huddled over the computer in the kitchen (it was too cold to do anything else). I eventually showered and put on fresh pajamas when it got dark. Not a terribly productive day. But it really was cold. Right now it’s 12.5 degrees C in the kitchen, with the heating on. (And the boiler’s in the kitchen too so maybe it should be the warmest room?)
Humm.
I worked on Friday, 10-7, and got given a bottle of wine for being a good little shop assistant and opening two Debenhams cards. Although the second one was at about 7 o’clock and I managed to delay the closing of the shop by doing it (although it wasn’t my fault that the phoning-up part took ages, I got put on hold and everything). I didn’t miss the bus this time because it was back to normal service so the last one left at half past. But I was the only person on the bus and the last one in the car park.
Onnnn Saturday there were lots of us in so we weren’t too rushed off our feet (as we had been other days, we’re on "Blue Cross Sale" now). I spent most of the day stickering knickers/briefs/whatever you like to call them (but not "panties" eugh). I parked at Wood Street Pay & Display so I wouldn’t have bus missing fun and I was rewarded with an array of frosty salad on the ground by the car and some nice frosty rosehips behind Lidl. I didn’t have time to stop and photo the funny purple berries in Goodlands Gardens though :( Maybe another day. Do I want more frost or a bearable temperature? How about both?
Ummm. I went home via Sainsbury’s where I found Covent Garden soups for 95p which I ate with half-bake baguette. Mmmmm. I spent most of the evening on MSN and Facebook talking to various people, including Anna who I went to school with but is originally from Hong Kong and at university in Leeds. She’s been in Taunton for the weekend so we organised a little get-together for today.
So today I got up earlier than I needed to but not as early as planned, because of coldness of house and warmth of bed. I tidied a few things I should’ve tidied earlier and put the dishwasher and some laundry on. Then I went and picked up Sarah and also Anna and we went to Pizza Hut, where we met Kat for lunch. They weren’t too busy so we easily got a table. But their heating was broken so we kept our coats on. And the waitresses were wearing gloves.
Anna, Sarah and Kat got minute bowls of pasta which weren’t super and certainly weren’t "perfect for lunch". I ordered a pasta bake thing and got given a plate of mozarella and tomato and an apology. Then I got the right thing and only got charged for the salad! We also realised later that they forgot to charge us for our desserts :s So lunch was cheap…
Then we went over to the cinema and sat in the foyer for about 20 minutes deciding which film we should see. We didn’t see one. Then we went to the bowling alley and stood about for 5 minutes before deciding we didn’t want to do that either. Everyone was a bit tired and apathetic, but it was ok because we all were!
So I drove us into town and we went and harassed a couple of friends who were working in shops, Sarah went to see her boyfriend who was going back to University this evening and we bumped into Emily & Lucy who were doing a bit of sale shopping. After a while we ended up in Starbucks and were rejoined by Sarah & boyfriend, Amy who’d finished work by then, and Lucy for a while.
Eventually I dropped Anna back home, handed Kat over to her Mum and took Sarah home too. Then I came home and did the washing up, emptied the dishwasher and awaited the return of my parents and sisters.
They brought me presents 😀

This is Anna, Sarah, Kat & me in the stairwell of the car park. It’s almost a circular mirror like those. But not quite.
I don’t know if it was this stairwell or one of the others that featured in Starpixie & Bolliston’s streams.

—————–

Gaga – her name was inspired by Lady Gaga & the baby sounds. "goo goo gaga" lol. Ironically I’m not a big Lady Gaga fan but I just like the way it sounds :)

Slinky Pop Toob – I knew from the day I started blythe I wanted a girl named Slinky Pop. It’s one of those names that just came to me. So when I googled it I found out that those crazy plastic tube toys I used to play with as a kid actually have a name "slinky pop toobs" Thus her name :)

JJ Evans – named after my favorite Good Times character 😀

Hendrix – after Jimi Hendrix <3

Donatella Dayglo Darko – Blythesighted & pinkanemone came up with "Donatella Dayglo" respectively when I needed help naming her. Donatella because she has tan skin and bright hair like Donatella Versace and Dayglo for her neon scalp. Recently she got a new darker scalp and I added Darko because I LOVE the movie Donnie Darko.

Ruse Subterfuge – She’s a Basaak which is considered a fake. So I looked up synonyms for fake and these two words went well together 😀

Bijoux – my Gbaby, Gina named her so you’ll have to ask her 😉

Memo – one of my favorite words of all time. I love the way sounds!

Coco Fluff – Because she’s a black blythe & originally I had planned to give her a big fluffy mohair reroot & because Coco Puff was too boring 😛

Jinx Gemini – I love the word Jinx and my boyfriend wanted to name her Gemini for some odd reason. Neither of us are geminis but it sounds cool!

Darling Fib – Frankie suggested Fib and I added the darling as a salute to my favorite customizer! <3 (She goes by Fib)

Solo Dolo – Frankie named her Solo and I added Dolo because my favorite musician (Kid Cudi) often calls himself "Mr. Solo Dolo"

Jeanette Chipette – It’s from Alvin & the chipmunks. I used to watch the cartoon all the time as a child. Jeanette is the nerdy one and counterpart to Simon. I always related to those two the most :)

My MLC still needs a name so if you’ve got any ideas, shoot! <3

honorable mention: Sweet Pickle lives with Juliet now but her name came from the fact that I LOVE sweet gherkins!! nom nom nom!
