According to a 21st Century Insurance study, of college students aged 18-25, 92 percent said that saving money is a priority. But Bright Futures scholarships seemto cover less and less, especially if a student is trying to save up for life after college or pay some of those pesky bills. So how do you turn that idea of saving money—more aptly that valuable financial aid money—into a priority? Students across FSU’s campus are dealing with less financial aid and scholarship money and growing expenses.
While some expenses, like rent and everyday living expenses are unavoidable, other extraneous buys are. The financial aid office’s website instructs students to consider their current spending habits. The students most successful at making their financial aid last are those who are able to budget and cut down on some unnecessary spending habits.
According to the Huffington Post, in 2011, the average college student spent 5 eating off campus. Ordering takeout might seem cheap and easy, but that total adds up and counts for more than 0 of the eating off campus total. Josephine Dubon has successfully managed her budget since arriving on campus her freshman year. Cutting back on extraneous purchases like dining at restaurants help her stretch her financial aid money.
“I only eat out once a week and I try to spend less than on groceries a week,” Dubon said.
While food is an obvious necessity, students find ways to save some money, such as shopping smart. Megan Daniels thinks about what she needs to buy before going shopping to cut down on her grocery bills.
“Then I go to Walmart to try and make [the final purchase] cheaper,” Daniels said.
Transportation is an area where students have found success in saving money. Students spend more than ,000 annually on on-campus transportation, according to the Huffington Post. Dubon, a junior, lived on campus for her first two years and now lives in an apartment complex close to campus. She doesn’t have a car on campus, which saves her time and money, and lets her avoid the nuisance of trying to find parking.
She walks to school or rides the buses and takes advantage of the free events and activities on campus so that when she wants to spend money on an event off campus, it doesn’t take a toll on her budget.
Florida State offers many events and activities that are free for students, such as the Student Life Cinema, which offers free movies to students. The SLC’s monthly calendar features blockbusters, advance screenings and indie films that offer an alternate to spending on a trip to the movies. Club Downunder is another entertainment option for students on a budget, as they offer plenty of free concerts and comedy acts throughout the semester.
According to the Huffington Post, the average student spends ,168 on textbooks and school supplies in a school year. Senior Abby Brown learned from her past experiences and decided to wait and see what textbooks her classes actually used frequently before buying all of the books on a class list.
“I bought my books as needed throughout the semester because money was tight and I didn’t want to buy a textbook if I wasn’t going to need it,” Brown said.
Forward thinking like that helps Brown and students all around Florida State budget their financial aid allotments responsibly so that their money successfully supports them through finals week.
